The ongoing confrontation between the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Jharkhand Police has now reached the courtroom, with the Central probe agency filing a writ petition before the Jharkhand High Court challenging the police raid at its Ranchi office.
In its petition, the ED has sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the entire episode, alleging serious concerns over the conduct and jurisdiction of the state police. The matter is scheduled to be heard by the High Court on Thursday.
The case has generated significant discussion in legal circles, as it highlights a direct clash over authority between a central investigative agency and the state police machinery.
The controversy stems from an FIR lodged by Santosh, an employee of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). In his complaint, Santosh alleged that he was assaulted during questioning at the ED’s Ranchi office. He also accused ED officials of misbehaviour and custodial harassment. Based on this complaint, a case was registered at the Airport police station in Ranchi.
Following the registration of the FIR, a large contingent of Ranchi Police on Thursday morning reached the ED’s zonal office. The police team remained at the premises for several hours, conducted inquiries, and questioned officials who were present at the office at the time of the alleged incident.
The legal battle between the two agencies is expected to have wider implications, as the High Court examines the limits and powers of central agencies and state police in such matters.
