After Delhi, 4.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Bihar

An earthquake hit Bihar, with its center in Siwan district, according to the National Centre of Seismology.

News Arena Network - Patna - UPDATED: February 17, 2025, 02:54 PM - 2 min read

An earthquake of 4 magnitude hit Bihar's Siwan.

On Monday morning, the region experienced a series of unsettling seismic events. A magnitude 4 earthquake struck Bihar just hours after strong tremors were felt in Delhi NCR.

The tremors in Delhi occurred at approximately 8:27 am, originating from just 10 km beneath the Earth's surface. Fortunately, no casualties or damage have been reported as of now.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Bihar’s Siwan district. This tremor came just three hours after a magnitude 4 earthquake had impacted Delhi at around 5:36 am.

The earthquake in Delhi had a significantly shallow depth of just 5 km, making it more susceptible to causing damage compared to deeper quakes.

Shallow earthquakes, typically originating from depths of 5 or 10 km below the surface, are often more destructive than those originating from greater depths. These shallow quakes tend to release energy closer to the Earth's surface, leading to a higher likelihood of structural damage and increased risk to residents in the affected areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi swiftly responded to the situation, urging citizens in Delhi and surrounding regions to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols.

He also emphasised the importance of staying alert for potential aftershocks. In a post on X, the Prime Minister stated, "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. I urge everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions while staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation."

In addition to the Prime Minister's message, political leaders in Delhi expressed their concern over the shallow earthquake. Acting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, along with former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, joined in offering prayers for the safety of residents. Both leaders called on the public to stay alert and be prepared for any further seismic activity in the coming hours.

Despite the alarming nature of the seismic events, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and no significant damage or injuries have been reported at this time.
