While scenes from the tragic incident in Wayanad are still afresh in our minds, Karnataka is bracing for a similar fate.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of potential landslides in 31 sub-divisions in Karnataka.

A red alert for heavy rainfall has also been issued for Wednesday in Karnataka’s five districts, namely, Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu.

After the alert was issued in Dakshina Kannada, the district administration declared a holiday for all schools and colleges for July 31.

Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for two districts — Uttara Kannada, Hassan, and a yellow alert in Belagavi.

Heavy rain lashed coastal Karnataka, leading to severe waterlogging. Houses in Dakshina Kannada district were submerged because of the Netravathi River flowing over the brim. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire brigade teams have been deployed in the area and rescue operations are underway.

According to the data released by the Dakshina Kannada disaster management team, heavy rain in the months of June and July claimed the lives of at least five people and as many as 106 houses were fully destroyed.

Five people were injured in the rain-related incidents. The Karnataka government has opened three relief camps to accommodate people seeking shelter.

The data revealed that at least 100 people seeking shelter were shifted to safer places or their relative’s places.
