A heartbreaking chain of events that began with a wedding just six weeks ago has ended in a double tragedy spanning two states. Suraj Shivanna, a 35-year-old from Bengaluru, was found dead in a Nagpur hotel room on Friday night, while his 60-year-old mother, Jayanti, is currently hospitalised after a failed suicide attempt.

The nightmare started in the Vidyaranyapura area of Bengaluru. Suraj and his wife, Ganavi, had been married for only a month and a half when she reportedly took her own life this past Thursday. In the aftermath of her death, girl's parents filed a complaint where they accused Suraj and his family of dowry harassment. This has led to a police case of abetment to suicide.

Fearing arrest and alleging that they were being threatened by Ganavi’s relatives, Suraj and his mother fled Bengaluru.

Accompanied by Suraj's younger brother, Sanjay, the family traveled first to Hyderabad before checking into a hotel on Wardha Road in Nagpur on December 26.

The pressure of the unfolding legal battle and the loss of his wife seemingly became too much for Suraj. Late Friday night, hotel staff alerted the police, who found Suraj hanging from a ceiling fan. His mother was discovered unconscious in the same room after attempting to follow her son’s lead. While Jayanti was rushed to the hospital and is now reportedly in stable condition, the family has been left utterly shattered.

Senior Inspector Nitin Magar of the Sonegaon police station confirmed that a case of accidental death has been registered in Nagpur. Local authorities are now working closely with the Bengaluru police to investigate the original dowry allegations and the circumstances that led the family to flee. For now, a younger brother is left to pick up the pieces of a life that was, until very recently, supposed to be a celebration of a new marriage.
