East Singhbhum police have intensified surveillance to curb the spread of fake and misleading content on social media ahead of the Ghatshila Assembly bye-election.
Authorities are closely monitoring attempts to influence voters through deceptive messages, edited videos, and AI-generated campaign material. Officials have identified 33 WhatsApp and Facebook groups engaged in suspicious activities. Cyber experts are continuously tracking the posts, videos, and shared links from these groups.
According to sources, some political workers linked to different parties are using artificial intelligence tools to create fabricated clips resembling leaders’ speeches, appeals, and campaign visuals. Several of these videos have been found misleading, raising concerns over voter manipulation.
The cyber cell has also reviewed 44 past cases from previous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Individuals previously involved in spreading fake news or edited videos have been summoned for questioning.
The District Election Officer warned that strict action will be taken against anyone circulating rumours or false information during the election. To ensure transparency, the administration has made it mandatory for political parties to maintain detailed records of all AI-generated content used in campaigning.
Each party must store information about the creator, production date, and timestamp of AI-based videos, audios, and posts for potential verification by investigating agencies. Officials said misuse of social media or AI tools to harm the image of any candidate or party will not be tolerated.
