The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Friday has announced its decision to contest 35 out of the total 126 seats independently in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam confirmed the decision, saying that the party will not form any alliance as of now.
“We will fight in 35 seats, and we will go solo this time,” Islam told the media, adding, “Recently, our MLAs held discussions with our party president Badruddin Ajmal and we are gearing up for the upcoming polls.”
Although the party is currently preparing to contest alone, Islam signaled openness to a potential alliance in the future. “If Congress or any other opposition party proposes an alliance to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party, the AIUDF will definitely consider it,” he said, adding, “Right now, there is no plan for an alliance, but we believe all opposition forces should unite against the BJP.”
In the 2021 Assembly elections, AIUDF had joined a grand alliance with the Congress, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Left parties to take on the ruling BJP.

Meanwhile, the Assam cabinet approved a significant pay hike for Gaon Pradhans. Their monthly remuneration will be increased from ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 starting October 1, 2025. This is part of the 2025–26 Budget commitments and is aimed at recognising the growing responsibilities of Gaon Pradhans across the state.
In another key decision, the cabinet cleared the implementation of the “Gaja Mitra” scheme in eight districts most affected by human-elephant conflict— Goalpara, Udalguri, Nagaon, Baksa, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath.
The scheme proposes the formation of community-based voluntary monitoring and rapid response teams in 80 conflict-prone locations. Each team will consist of eight local members and will operate for six months, a period that coincides with peak human-elephant conflict and paddy cultivation season.
The initiative aims to reduce incidents of human-animal conflict by ensuring timely interventions and community engagement in conservation efforts.
