Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh was apprehended by the Punjab Police on Thursday in the Ajnala attack case and produced before an Ajnala court virtually, which granted a two-day police remand.
The arrest was carried out immediately after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) ended on April 22.
The High Court allowed the state government to keep Amritpal Singh lodged in the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail rather than transferring him to Punjab, citing law and order concerns.
According to court directions, all legal proceedings in the case, including police remand and any further judicial custody, will continue through video conferencing.
The arrangement enables the main accused to participate in court proceedings without the security risks and logistical problems involved in transporting him physically to Amritsar. He is likely to be produced before the court again on Saturday after completion of the initial remand period.
The case
The case relates to the February 2023 Ajnala incident, when Amritpal Singh and his supporters reportedly broke police barricades and entered a police station carrying weapons to secure the release of an associate. A clash between protesters and police personnel also took place during the incident, and Amritpal Singh was named the main accused.
