Akal Takht, the supreme authority of Sikhism, has declared that it will take suo moto cognisance of cases involving sacrilege against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, asserting its commitment to preserving the sanctity of Sikh scriptures.
This decision was announced by acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, who emphasised the urgent need to address rising incidents of sacrilege.
Speaking at a recent event in Ludhiana, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj urged gurdwara management committees to uphold the highest respect for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and to strictly adhere to the regulations set by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
“If there is any lapse in respect and reverence towards Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji anywhere, and if any act of sacrilege occurs, Akal Takht will intervene and take strict action, even if no formal complaint has been lodged,” he asserted.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj also raised serious concerns over the government's handling of the December 2021 sacrilege attempt at the Golden Temple. He criticised authorities for failing to disclose the identity of the accused, despite repeated demands from the SGPC for a DNA test to uncover those responsible.
The incident, which led to the death of a youth after he allegedly attempted sacrilege inside the sanctum of Harmandir Sahib, remains unresolved.
The acting Jathedar accused the government of shielding those behind the act and called upon the entire Sikh Panth to unite and demand justice.
With this firm stance, Akal Takht has signaled its intent to take independent action against any act that threatens the sanctity of Sikh religious scriptures, underscoring its role as the ultimate authority in matters concerning the Sikh faith.
