Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed officials to upgrade all medical colleges in the state with modern medical equipment by the end of this year to provide better healthcare facilities to patients.
Chairing a meeting of the Health Department on Thursday evening, the Chief Minister said the state government has filled thousands of vacancies in the department to address the shortage of staff. He added that the government is introducing cutting-edge technology in the health sector on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and will provide full support to ensure efficient and effective healthcare delivery.
Sukhu said three advanced testing laboratories are being established at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda; Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur; and Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality (AIMSS), Chamiyana, for which the government has released ₹75 crore.
He said a PET scan machine has been installed at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, while the procurement of PET scan machines for Tanda and Hamirpur medical colleges is underway. He added that the recruitment process for 71 posts in various paramedical categories and 50 Junior Office Assistant (IT) posts is in progress, while an additional 162 paramedical posts have already been sanctioned.
The Chief Minister said medical students should have a conducive academic environment and that a batch size of 60 students would be maintained to ensure quality education. He said the government has sanctioned Rs 5.76 crore for the construction of three lecture theatres and an examination hall at IGMC, Shimla. An additional Rs 14.13 crore has been allocated for the construction of a lecture theatre at Tanda Medical College.
He further said construction of a Critical Care Block at an estimated cost of Rs 23.75 crore and an additional block costing RS 42 crore is underway at AIMSS Chamiyana. He directed officials to expedite both projects.
Sukhu said that once these projects are completed and the required manpower is in place, better healthcare services will be available to people closer to their homes.
Advocate General Anup Rattan, Principal Secretary (Health) M. Sudha Devi, Secretary to the Chief Minister Ashish Singhmar, Mission Director (NHM) Pradeep Thakur, Special Secretary Dr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Director of Health Services Dr. Gopal Beri and other senior officials attended the meeting.
