A man allegedly killed his father-in-law with a sharp weapon in Uttarakhand’s Almora district and fled with his wife, police said on Tuesday. The accused, Dharamveer, is a resident of Haryana. Police said he escaped from the village with his wife soon after the attack.
The victim, Chandrashekhar Pandey, 52, had recently returned from Haryana to his ancestral village to start farming. His eldest daughter was married to Dharamveer in April this year. The couple had reached Seli village in Dhauladevi block on June 20.
According to police, an argument broke out the following day. During the fight, Dharamveer allegedly attacked Pandey with a sharp farm tool locally known as a pathal.
Pandey suffered more than a dozen injuries, including serious wounds to the head and fractures in his limbs. Police said the accused and his wife then locked Pandey’s wife and children inside a room before fleeing.
Later in the evening, family members and villagers broke open the room and found Pandey badly injured. He was first taken to the Community Health Centre in Dhauladevi and later referred to Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani as his condition worsened. However, he died on the way to the hospital. Police said doctors found that he had suffered heavy blood loss and a severe skull fracture.
Danya police station in-charge Dinesh Nath Mahant said a forensic team has collected evidence from the spot. Initial probe suggests the murder may have been planned in advance.
Police teams are carrying out raids in Seli and nearby areas to trace the couple. Uttarakhand Police have also contacted Haryana Police to help in the arrest. Further probe is underway to find out the exact motive behind the killing.
