In a move set to boost connectivity and development in north Chhattisgarh, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted a license to Ambikapur's Maa Mahamaya Airport, paving the way for commercial flight operations.
Developed under the UDAN scheme's 3-C VFR category, the airport will now accommodate 72-seater aircraft.
The state government, which had applied for the license in December 2022, is actively pursuing routes connecting Ambikapur to Raipur, Bilaspur, Lucknow, Patna, and Ranchi.
This development comes alongside a significant MoU signed with Alliance Air to initiate regular commercial flights from Bilaspur and Jagdalpur. Bilaspur will now have regular connections to Delhi and Kolkata, while Jagdalpur gains a route to Delhi via Jabalpur.
These services, launched on March 12th in a preliminary phase, are set to become permanent by the month's end, with the state government providing financial assistance to ensure their viability.
The DGCA clearance and the Alliance Air pact mark a significant stride for Chhattisgarh's regional connectivity, promising to enhance tourism and commercial activity in the state's northern reaches.
