Amethi murder: Cops say ‘illicit relationship' behind crime

Police personnel investigate after four members of a family were shot dead at their home, in Amethi.

In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi, Chandan Verma, the primary suspect in the brutal murder of a school teacher, his wife, and their two young daughters, has confessed to the killings.

According to the police, Verma was involved in an extramarital affair with the teacher’s wife, Poonam, which had soured in recent months, leading to the violent attack.

Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh revealed that Verma, during questioning, admitted that his deteriorating relationship with Poonam, which had been ongoing for 1.5 years, caused him significant stress.

This emotional turmoil allegedly drove him to fatally shoot the entire family. Verma fired 10 rounds from a pistol, killing Sunil, the school teacher, his wife Poonam, and their daughters, 6-year-old Drishti and 1-year-old daughter. After the murders, Verma tried to take his own life but failed.

Reports suggest that Verma, along with several other armed assailants, broke into the family’s home and opened fire. The victims were later declared dead at the hospital.

Verma was apprehended at a toll plaza in Noida while attempting to flee towards Delhi. He was injured in a shootout during his capture after trying to grab a police officer’s gun.

Authorities were able to trace Verma based on a WhatsApp message he had posted before the crime, which read, "Five people will die, I will show you soon," signaling his intentions.

Police have also discovered that Poonam had previously filed a complaint against Verma under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, making him a key suspect in the case.

The police are continuing their investigation and are working to recover the murder weapon and the motorbike used in the crime.
