Riding a sweeping electoral mandate, the BJP is set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal after securing a decisive two-thirds majority in the Assembly elections. With 207 seats won out of 293 declared results, the party has comfortably crossed the effective majority mark, paving the way for a historic political transition in the state.
The focus has now shifted to the selection of the next Chief Minister. In line with party procedure, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been appointed as the central observer to oversee the election of the BJP’s legislative party leader in Bengal. He will be assisted by Mohan Charan Majhi, who has been named co-observer for the process.
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly comprises 294 seats, though results for the Falta constituency remain pending following the Election Commission’s order for a re-poll. As a result, the effective majority mark stood at 148 for this election cycle. The BJP’s tally places it well above this threshold.
According to party sources, the newly elected BJP MLAs will soon convene in Kolkata for the legislative party meeting, where they will elect their leader. The chosen leader will subsequently be sworn in as the Chief Minister. Shah is expected to arrive in the city later this week to oversee the proceedings, though the exact date of his visit is yet to be officially confirmed.
Speculation is also rife regarding the swearing-in ceremony, with indications that the new government may take oath on Saturday, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari — the only candidate to contest from two constituencies — secured victories in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur. In a message shared on social media, he expressed gratitude to voters for their support, describing the outcome as a victory for party workers and “patriotic nationalists.”
He reiterated the party’s commitment to building a “prosperous, secure, and developed” West Bengal, emphasizing inclusive governance and public service as key priorities for the incoming administration. He also acknowledged the role of the Election Commission, security forces, and administrative personnel in ensuring the smooth conduct of the polls.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the victory through a social media post, highlighting the importance of perseverance and integrity. Sharing a video message, he underscored that lasting success is achieved through hard work and adherence to truth, quoting a Sanskrit verse to emphasise values such as righteousness, compassion, and initiative as the true pillars of victory.
As Bengal prepares for a new government, attention now turns to the leadership choice that will shape the state’s political and administrative direction in the years ahead.
