Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to attend the 62nd Raising Day celebrations of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during his day-long visit to Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh on December 20.
Amit Shah will attend the event as the chief guest. The Raising Day function will be held at the SSB’s Central Training Centre (CTC) in the Sapri area of Kangra district.
The ceremony will begin at 11.30 am on December 20 and will showcase the SSB’s achievements, operational readiness and service in protecting India’s borders. Senior officers, personnel of the force and several dignitaries are expected to attend.
Last year, the SSB’s 61st Raising Day was celebrated in Siliguri, West Bengal. On that occasion, the Home Minister e-inaugurated the Integrated Check Post at Agartala and a newly built residential complex of the Border Guarding Force at Petrapole.
During that event, Shah and senior officials praised the SSB for upholding its motto of “service, security and brotherhood.” The force was also lauded for maintaining strong traditions of trust, heritage and friendship with neighbouring Nepal and Bhutan.
The SSB was raised in 1963 in the aftermath of the 1962 India-China war. It is one of India’s central armed police forces and functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The force is mainly responsible for guarding the 2,450-kilometre-long borders with Nepal and Bhutan. It also performs internal security duties, carries out anti-smuggling operations and responds during disasters.
Over the years, the SSB has played a key role in ensuring border security, building confidence among people living in border areas and supporting civil administration during emergencies. The annual Raising Day honours the dedication and sacrifices of its personnel.
The SSB has also taken proactive steps to curb narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, arms smuggling and infiltration of anti-national elements along the borders. In coordination with the CRPF and local police, the force has also contributed significantly to making the eastern region Naxal-free.
