Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on Friday night for a crucial visit, during which he is expected to hold a series of meetings with BJP legislators and members of the state government.

According to party sources, Shah will meet BJP MLAs, along with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and other ministers, on Saturday. The meetings are expected to focus on outlining the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives over the next five years.

Senior BJP leaders indicated that the primary objective of the visit is to define how the current BJP-led administration in West Bengal intends to distinguish itself from previous governments led by the CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Home Minister is likely to emphasise governance strategies aimed at establishing a distinct administrative identity and delivering on electoral promises.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already praised six key decisions taken during the first Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Adhikari. Most of these decisions were part of the party’s pre-election commitments. Going forward, the government is expected to implement its remaining promises while also introducing new policies to address emerging challenges.

Sources further stated that the discussions will also aim to encourage ministers and MLAs to actively contribute to policymaking and governance. The Cabinet will be responsible for administrative execution and the effectiveness of the government will largely depend on the performance and public engagement of its legislators.

A state-level BJP leader noted that the Home Minister’s address will place particular emphasis on the role of MLAs in communicating the government’s achievements to the public, while also addressing criticisms and shortcomings transparently. This approach, the leader added, aligns with repeated guidance from Narendra Modi to party representatives across the country.

There is also speculation that Shah may announce the names of additional Cabinet ministers during the meeting. Notably, it was under his leadership at a meeting held on May 8 that the BJP legislative party formally elected Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister.

Party sources confirmed that the venue and exact timing of Saturday’s meetings are yet to be finalised. However, the sessions are expected to take place in Kolkata as part of the Home Minister’s official itinerary.
