Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Assam on Thursday for a two-day visit to inaugurate and lay foundation stones of multiple infrastructure projects and address a public rally, with key events scheduled in Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts.
Shah will land at Dibrugarh airport on Thursday evening and stay overnight at Manohari Resort in Upper Assam. During the visit, he will meet senior BJP leaders and review preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
“He will meet senior BJP leaders and discuss poll strategies for the upcoming Assembly polls,” a senior official said.
At 11 am on Friday, Shah will lay the foundation stone of the Assam Legislative Assembly’s second complex in Dibrugarh, to be built at a cost of Rs 284 crore. The project will include the Assembly building, an MLA hostel, an 800-capacity auditorium and a 400-capacity barracks, according to a Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) advertisement. The complex is scheduled to be completed within 30 months.
The Union Home Minister will also inaugurate the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex in Dibrugarh.
“The Union home minister will inaugurate the first phase of the project, comprising an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, main gallery, tennis court, volleyball court, basketball court and hostels built at a cost of Rs 238 crore,” the DIPR said.

“Shah will then lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the sports complex, which will have an additional public seating space for 30,000 people, a central playground, athletic track and lifts. This will cost Rs 209 crore,” the DIPR said.
He will also lay the foundation stone of the Institute of Wildlife Health and Research at Dinjan, aimed at strengthening wildlife research, diagnostics and policy interventions.
In addition, Shah will virtually launch projects for the restoration and rejuvenation of Assam’s wetlands under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund scheme.
“All the programmes of Shah in Dibrugarh will be organised centrally at Khanikar Parade Ground. After unveiling the projects, he will address a public rally there,” an official said.
Following the Dibrugarh engagements, Shah will travel to Dhemaji district to attend the Takam Mising Porin Kebang Youth Festival as chief guest. He will later visit the Assam BJP headquarters in Guwahati for discussions on the state’s political situation before departing for West Bengal in the evening.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior BJP leaders will accompany Shah during the visit.
This will be Shah’s second visit to Assam after his one-day tour on December 29 last year. Assembly elections to Assam’s 126 constituencies are expected in March-April.
