Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, visited forward areas along the International Border in Kathua district to take stock of the security situation in the region.

The Home Minister visited the border outposts of Gurnam and Bobiyan in the Hiranagar sector and interacted with personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) guarding the key and critical positions along the IB, officials said.

His visit comes at a time when security forces have intensified counter-terror operations in Kishtwar and neighbouring districts in the Jammu region. The recent encounters between security forces and terrorists left at least three terrorists dead in the Kathua and Kishtwar forest belts.

Shah arrived in Jammu late on Thursday evening and was received by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior BJP leaders at the Jammu airport.

In Kathua district, the Home Minister virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for six welfare schemes for border guards at Bobiyan, the officials said.

He is likely to chair a high-level security review meeting at Lok Bhawan in Jammu and also distribute appointment letters to the families of some terror victims later in the day, officials added.

Shah will be leaving Jammu for Kashmir later in the day, where he is also supposed to chair another security review meeting with officials at Lok Bhawan in Srinagar, they said.
