The Amritsar district administration announced on Sunday that 715 panchayats across the district have unanimously resolved not to support individuals involved in drug smuggling, theft, or other criminal activities.
Officials stated that this collective decision aims to curb the drug menace by discouraging illegal activities at the village level.
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney emphasized that panchayats have been urged to cooperate with the district administration and encourage law enforcement to take strict action against drug smugglers.
She highlighted that such community-driven initiatives are vital in the fight against drugs, as they reinforce grassroots-level vigilance and collective responsibility.
According to Sawhney, panchayats from various blocks have taken a firm stand, including 64 in Ajnala, 52 in Attari, 90 in Chogawan, 64 in Harsha Chhina, 48 in Jandiala, 95 in Majitha, 60 in Ramdas, 87 in Raya, 83 in Tarsika, and 72 in Verka. These resolutions reflect their strong commitment to creating a drug-free Punjab.
To further support the anti-drug campaign, the administration has introduced initiatives to provide free treatment and meals for drug addicts at de-addiction and rehabilitation centers.
Additionally, plans are underway to construct large-scale sports stadiums in villages, offering youth opportunities to engage in productive activities and stay away from drugs.
