Amul is set to establish the world’s largest yogurt manufacturing facility in West Bengal with an investment of around Rs 600 crore, marking a major boost to the state’s dairy and food processing sector.

The development was confirmed by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), which said the investment details were finalised during the Bengal Global Business Summit 2025.

The integrated dairy facility is being constructed at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah near Kolkata and is expected to emerge as the largest yogurt production plant globally.

The project is being executed in two phases by Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd..

According to Jayen Mehta, the plant will have the capacity to produce one million kilograms of yogurt daily and process up to 1.5 million litres of milk every day.

Officials said the investment was strategically aimed at meeting strong consumer demand for yogurt products in Bengal, where traditional items such as mishti doi and tok doi form an integral part of local cuisine.

The facility is expected to cater to markets across Kolkata and neighbouring districts while strengthening Amul’s footprint in eastern India.

The project also aligns with the Centre’s ‘White Revolution 2.0’ initiative under the Ministry of Cooperation, which focuses on boosting dairy production, strengthening rural livelihoods and expanding milk procurement networks.

Officials said the upcoming facility would generate employment opportunities and enhance dairy infrastructure in the region.

GCMMF has continued expanding its domestic and global operations in recent years. During the 2023–24 financial year, the federation reported a turnover of Rs 59,445 crore.

According to the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN), GCMMF ranks among the world’s leading dairy companies in milk processing.

Amul currently exports products to nearly 50 countries and has also expanded into the United States market.

The establishment of the massive yogurt facility in West Bengal is being viewed as a significant milestone in the state’s industrialisation efforts.
