The Telugu Desam Party government in Andhra Pradesh is all set to resurrect Janma Bhoomi, a unique rural development programme introduced by it in 1997 when it was in power in the combined state.

Janma Bhoomi (Motherland), inspired by South Korea's “Saemaul Undong” programme,  was an initiative involving people in the formulation and execution of rural development schemes. It was one of the pet programmes of N Chandrababu Naidu when he was the CM of the combined AP from 1995 to 2004.

Back at the helm of the residuary AP, Naidu is keen on reviving the programme to address issues like uneven development, and underutilization of resources. The ultimate aim is to enhance the quality of life through participatory and transparent governance.

The scheme would be brought back in a new avatar— Janma Bhoomi-II—to suit the needs of Andhra Pradesh, which badly needed impetus for development post-bifurcation.

A recent meeting of the TDP politburo, chaired by Naidu, decided to use the second edition of Janma Bhoomi to propel the state government’s public, and private, people’s participation (PPPP) initiative for poverty eradication in the state.

According to TDP legislator and politburo member Kaluva Srinvasulu, the politburo decided to revive the Janma Bhoomi programme to involve people in the development of villages.

In its previous Avatar, the Janma Bhoomi programme caught the imagination of the people and had nationwide acclaim.
