The government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to establish three new districts, which will increase the total number of districts in the state to 29. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has approved the recommendations of the Group of Ministers proposing the creation of Markapuram, Madanapalle, and Polavaram districts.
A decision was also taken to form five new revenue divisions, namely, Nakkapalli (in Anakapalli district), Addanki (in Prakasam district), Peeleru (in Madanapalle district), Banaganapalle (in Nandyala district) and Madakasira (in Satyasai district).
The meeting also resulted in the decision to form a new Peddaharivanam mandal by dividing the Adoni mandal of Kurnool district.
The boundaries of the new districts have been outlined. Rampachodavaram and Chinturu revenue divisions will be parts of Polavaram district. Rampachodavaram will serve as the district headquarters. Markapuram district will be formed with Yerragondapalem, Markapuram, Kanigiri, and Giddaluru revenue divisions, and Madanapalli district will be formed with Madanapalli, Punganuru, and Peeleru revenue divisions.
The Chief Minister had stated last month that the reorganisation of districts undertaken in the state should fulfil the aspirations of the people and provide administrative convenience. He stressed that the problems which arose with the formation of new districts by the previous government should be resolved, and simultaneously, no new issues should be created.
After the bifurcation in 2014, the residual Andhra Pradesh was left with only 13 districts. The previous YSRCP government doubled that number to 26 in 2022. The TDP-led coalition had promised during last year’s election that districts would be reorganised and new revenue divisions formed to correct the "unscientific formation" of new districts under the previous administration.
CM Naidu had previously stated that the ill-conceived decision of the previous government on the formation of new districts caused regional differences, as it had not taken into account the aspirations of the people.
He had asked the seven-member ministerial subcommittee on district reorganisation, formed on July 22 this year, to undertake the reorganisation of districts while keeping in mind the delimitation of constituencies. He also requested a separate study on which revenue ward and constituency the people of the flooded mandals would be in after the completion of the Polavaram project, ensuring the reorganisation is carried out accordingly.
