A 30-year-old woman died by suicide by hanging herself in the YSR Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh after a dispute with her husband over his drinking habits, police said. The incident has triggered widespread outrage after a video recorded by the husband during the episode surfaced online.
The deceased, identified as Krishnaveni, was married to Sriram Srinivasulu, a loco pilot from Ongole. The couple had married in 2016 following the death of Srinivasulu’s first wife and were living with their two sons in a rented house in Boyanapalli village under the Rajampet mandal of YSR Kadapa district.
According to police officials, the incident occurred on Thursday after an argument between the couple. Following the quarrel, Krishnaveni reportedly locked herself inside a room in their house and attempted suicide.
“Instead of immediately breaking open the door or seeking help, Srinivasulu, who was standing outside the room, began recording the incident on his mobile phone,” a police official said.
In the video, which later circulated locally, Srinivasulu can reportedly be heard laughing and mocking Krishnaveni, apparently believing she was only pretending in order to scare him during their argument.
Police said the situation escalated quickly and turned tragic within moments. When Srinivasulu realised the seriousness of the situation, he attempted to open the door but was unable to break the latch. He then raised an alarm and called neighbours for help. Local residents rushed to the house and eventually forced the door open.
However, Krishnaveni had already died by the time they entered the room.
The video recorded by Srinivasulu surfaced the following day, sparking anger among local residents and on social media. Police have since registered a case and launched an investigation to determine whether the husband’s actions amount to abetment of suicide or criminal negligence.
“We are examining the video evidence and questioning the husband. All legal angles are being investigated,” a police official said. “Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the post-mortem report.”
Neighbours and relatives told police that the couple frequently quarrelled due to Srinivasulu’s alleged drinking habit. According to them, Krishnaveni had been under severe emotional stress and had reportedly threatened to end her life several times over the past six months.
Police said the husband allegedly dismissed these statements, assuming they were attempts to frighten him during arguments.
