AP govt okays ₹27 cr to restore Bhogapuram airport water outlets

The Government Order further notes that the airport's master plan must incorporate overall site sustainability, which includes provisions for rainwater harvesting of at least 50 per cent of all stormwater runoff generated on site. The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday sanctioned ₹27 crore for the immediate restoration of four critical rainwater outlets essential for the under-construction Bhogapuram International Airport. The Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Ltd (APADCL) proposed to the state government that four specific outlets, or outfall canals — designated as OT1, OT2, OT4, and OT5 — require urgent restoration, including necessary improvements and desilting.

A Government Order (GO) issued by Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu confirmed the allocation: "Government, after careful examination hereby agreed to meet the... expenditure requirement for an amount of ₹2,700 lakh (₹27 crore) for immediate restoration of four critical outfall canals... of International Airport of Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district."

The GO specifies that the necessary funds will be drawn from the ₹1,000 crore loan sanctioned by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO). The Water Resources Department will be responsible for undertaking the outfall canals restoration work.

The Government Order further notes that the airport's master plan must incorporate overall site sustainability, which includes provisions for rainwater harvesting of at least 50 per cent of all stormwater runoff generated on site. This water is intended for use in recharging the aquifer or for irrigation.

Crucially, all the airport's existing outlet points release runoff into irrigation canals situated outside its boundaries. The immediate restoration of these canals is required to ensure proper discharge of floodwater.

In related news, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu previously announced that the Bhogapuram Airport is scheduled to be inaugurated in August 2026.
