Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

When he was in power, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was often accused of pursuing politics of vengeance, targeting his political opponents and framing cases against them.

Barely a month after losing power, he finds himself at the receiving end.

Andhra Pradesh police have registered a case against Jagan, who is the president of the YSR Congress Party and two senior IPS officers based on a complaint filed by the ruling Telugu Desam party (TDP) MLA Raghu Rama Krishnam Raju.

Raju was formerly with the YSRCP and an MP from Narasapuram, before he fell out with Jagan. He later joined the TDP and won in the recent elections.

The former MP has alleged that he was whisked away from his home in Hyderabad, detained, beaten up and kept in illegal custody by two IPS officers and their staff and that later when he was produced before a government doctor, a fake medical certificate was issued.

On May 14, 2021, Raju was arrested on charges of sedition after he filed a plea before the CBI special court in Hyderabad that it should cancel bail granted to Jagan in an alleged disproportionate assets case.

He was taken into custody by the CID officials after they issued a notice under IPC Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), and 505 (public mischief). He was later granted bail by the Supreme Court.

He alleged in his complaint that after he was taken to the CID office, former CID chief P V Sunil Kumar and former Intelligence IG PSR Anjaneyulu and other officials manhandled him and thrashed him with a belt and lathis, and prevented him from taking medicines for a heart surgery he had undergone four months earlier.

He alleged that the officers were acting at the behest of then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. He claimed that he was threatened of dire consequences if he continued to criticise Jagan.

Raju, 62, won from Narsapuram Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, on a YSRCP ticket, but fell out with the party soon after the elections.

He then launched a series of vitriolic attacks on Jagan and the party. His arrest was prompted by a YouTube post in which Raju was seen attacking the then Adviser, Public Affairs, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, accusing the latter of instigating YSRCP social media cell to upload posts against him.

Based on his complaint, a case was registered under sections 120B (Conspiracy), 166 and 167 (public servant intentionally creating incorrect documents), 197 (issuing false certificates), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 465 (forgery) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.

Apart from the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, the FIR features the names of former DG (CB CID) PV Sunil Kumar, former Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu, Addl SP (CBCID) R Vijaya Paul and Dr Prabhavathi.

The FIR invoked the provisions of the Indian Penal Code, as the alleged offense took place before the new law Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into existence on July 1 this year.
