Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday unveiled the impressive 125-foot tall statue of B R Ambedkar in Vijayawada. Costing a whopping Rs 400 crore, the statue, affectionately termed the 'Statue of Social Justice,' stands proudly atop an 81-foot tall concrete pedestal within a comprehensive complex.
The complex boasts various amenities, including the B R Ambedkar experience centre, a 2,000-seat convention centre, a food court, a children's play area, a musical fountain, and picturesque walkways.
Addressing the public gathering before the inauguration, Chief Minister Reddy highlighted the monumental significance of Ambedkar, referring to him as an "immortal social reformer" who transformed India's social, financial, and women's history.
Drawing a parallel to the iconic Statue of Liberty in the United States, Reddy envisioned that henceforth, the 'Statue of Social Justice' would resonate as a symbol of pride in India.
The statue, constructed with steel framing and bronze cladding, required a staggering 400 MT of stainless steel and 120 MT of bronze. The elaborate 85-foot pedestal, designed in the style of the Kalachakra Maha Mandal from Buddhist architecture, is crafted from pink sandstone sourced from Rajasthan.
The ambitious project, spearheaded by the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Department as the nodal agency and executed by the AP Industries and Infrastructure Corporation Ltd, commenced on December 21, 2021.
The inauguration marks a milestone in honoring the legacy of B R Ambedkar, encapsulating his contributions to social justice and reform in a monumental structure that will undoubtedly stand as a symbol of inspiration for generations to come.
