The father of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura who died following an alleged racial assault, on Wednesday accused the Uttarakhand Police of negligence. He added that the main accused is still absconding because of administrative failure.
Tarun Prasad Chakma, a head constable with the Border Security Force (BSF), said four months have passed since his son's death but the prime accused, Yagyaraj Awasthi, has not been arrested. Awasthi, a resident of Kanchanpur in Nepal, allegedly fled across the border after the incident.
“There is no active police operation. The main accused is in Nepal, and there is no clue regarding his whereabouts,” Tarun said. He further alleged that local police officials were “colluding” with the accused and claimed that an FIR was registered only after intervention by a Member of Parliament.
Anjel Chakma, a resident of Tripura’s Unakoti district, was allegedly attacked by a group of six persons on December 9, 2025, after he raised objections to racial remarks directed at him and his younger brother in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. He succumbed to injuries at a hospital on December 26.
His father, currently posted in Sipahijala district, said Anjel was a bright student who had secured an MBA placement with an annual package of Rs 12 lakh. “I served in the BSF for 30 years, often on round-the-clock duty, to support his education. He was to begin his internship on December 27, but fate decided otherwise,” he said.
The grieving father added that the incident has deeply affected his younger son, a second-year undergraduate student in Uttarakhand.
“My younger son has withdrawn into silence. I have lost one son, and the other is struggling to cope with the trauma,” Chakma said. The family has received Rs 8.25 lakh as compensation from the Social Welfare Department.
Police have so far arrested five of the six accused, including two minors. Vikasnagar Circle Officer Vivek Singh Kutiyal said a lookout notice was issued in January and a Blue Corner notice has been initiated to trace Awasthi. “The process for issuing a Red Corner notice is underway,” the officer added.
