Speculation over the political future of former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai intensified on Thursday, with reports suggesting that he could make a major announcement in Chennai on June 5 amid growing buzz about his possible exit from the party.
The development comes days after Annamalai met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 2. The meeting, which lasted around 30 minutes, took place against the backdrop of reports that the former IPS officer had informed the BJP leadership of his intention to step down from the party.
While neither side has officially disclosed details of the discussions, party sources indicated that Annamalai was asked to defer any decision on resignation until further consultations were completed.
According to sources, Annamalai is keen to ensure that any separation from the BJP remains amicable and does not result in a public confrontation with the party leadership.
Political circles have also been abuzz with speculation that Annamalai may launch a people’s movement, which could eventually evolve into a political outfit. Sources close to the leader said he believes Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has changed significantly following the emergence of actor Vijay as a political force.

The uncertainty surrounding his future has fuelled intense interest in his proposed announcement. Before leaving for Delhi earlier this week, Annamalai had indicated that clarity would emerge soon.
“Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days,” he told reporters, adding that he would explain his position and answer all questions shortly.
The developments come amid organisational changes within the Tamil Nadu BJP. Annamalai was recently replaced as state unit president by Nainar Nagenthran, while the party has also renewed its electoral alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Annamalai, who took charge of the Tamil Nadu BJP in 2021, became one of the party’s most recognisable faces in the state through his aggressive campaigning and outspoken political style. However, his approach reportedly strained relations with the AIADMK during earlier phases of the alliance.
With uncertainty continuing over whether he will remain within the BJP fold, launch a movement or float a new political party, attention is now focused on Chennai, where Annamalai is expected to reveal his next course of action.
