A portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Madhubani on Friday, the fifth such collapse in 11 days.
The most recent incident took place in the Bheja police station area of Madhubani district, located in the northern part of the state near the Nepal border.
Although officials remained silent about the occurrence, sources from the Rural Works Department, responsible for constructing the 75-meter-long bridge, confirmed that one of the pillars was washed away a few days ago.
They said the bridge was being constructed at a cost of about Rs 3 crore over the Bhutahi river which has been in spate on account of torrential rains in catchment areas of Nepal.
According to sources, the district administration has been tasked with investigating the issue and providing a report. The relevant contractor has been directed to repair the structure promptly.
A video depicting the collapsed bridge, which has been under construction for over two years, has become widely circulated.
Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, shared the video on X, indirectly criticising the Nitish Kumar government.
"Another bridge has collapsed in Bihar. Did you get to know? If not, guess why," said the RJD leader, who is also a former deputy CM.
Last week, one incident each of bridge collapse was reported from the Araria, Siwan and East Champaran districts while a similar mishap took place in Kishanganj on Thursday.
