Another elephant dies after being hit by Maoists’ IED in J'khand

Earlier, a six-year-old elephant had died on July 5 after being hit by an IED in the same area.

Another wild elephant succumbed to its injuries on Friday after being hit by IEDs planted by Maoists in dense Saranda jungles of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand.

 

Earlier, a six-year-old elephant had died on July 5 after being hit by an IED in the same area.

 

Sources said that after tracing the injured elephant, a veterinary team of the forest department was providing it first aid. Its proper treatment was to be started from Wednesday by specialists from Vantara of Gujarat.

 

When the elephants were injured by IED both the times, the forest department contacted Vantara, the country's largest wildlife rescue team based in Jamnagar, Gujarat. However, it proved insufficient to save the lives of the injured elephants.

The Vantara team arrived eight days after the first elephant was injured. The elephant died shortly after the team started treatment. The second elephant was also to be provided treatment by Vantara specialists.

 

But, before their arrival, a team of veterinary doctors from Odisha and Jharkhand were treating the injured elephant. The elephant was fed medicine mixed with jackfruit and gourd on Tuesday. But despite this, the elephant died on Wednesday.

 

Lately, elephants are getting badly injured after coming in contact with IED in Saranda Forest area. This elephant was found in injured condition near Tirilposi check dam.

 

Two days ago, it was traced by the forest department, which was confirmed by DFO of Saranda Forest Division Abhirup Sinha. The remains of the dead elephant are being brought to Jaraikela located in Samata Forest Project Complex. It will be buried after post-mortem on Saturday.
