Despite the AAP-led Punjab government’s ongoing campaign against drug abuse, another life has been lost to addiction in Tarn Taran district. A young man from Dhotian village was found dead in the grain market area of Patti on Monday, in what the police suspect to be a case of drug overdose.
The police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information and took custody of the body, which has been sent for postmortem to confirm the exact cause of death.
The victim’s mother has levelled serious allegations, claiming that certain women in the area have been openly peddling drugs for years but no significant action was taken against her by the police or the administration.
“Had the authorities acted in time, my son would still be alive,” she said, overwhelmed with grief.
The incident has once again drawn public attention to the worsening drug crisis in Punjab’s rural belt. While the state authorities continue to assert that efforts are being made to dismantle the drug network, incidents like these cast doubt on the effectiveness of enforcement at the grassroots level.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, and statements are being recorded from the victim’s family. Meanwhile, Dhotian village remains in mourning, with local residents demanding immediate and strict action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
