Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, said on Thursday that the operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector, where an Army soldier was killed during an exchange of fire with terrorists, is still ongoing.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Tiranga bike rally, the SSP said the area was remote and had hostile terrain, which was why the police team was yet to reach the encounter site.
“The legal and medico formalities of the Army jawan have been completed,” he said, adding that an FIR has been registered to investigate the matter further.
When asked about the exact number of terrorists involved, the senior officer replied the exact figure was not yet known as the operation had not yet ended.
“Once it’s done, we will be going to the spot to assess the happenings. The Army is on the job, and we don’t want to disrupt the ongoing operation,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, security officials said the exchange of fire occurred during an infiltration bid, which was foiled along the LoC in the Uri sector.
The incident took place after the conclusion of longest encounters recorded in recent decades in the Kashmir Valley. Reports suggest the terrorists managed to slip away from security forces and escape the encounter site after 11 days of relentless firefight.
