Ahmedabad Police have seized counterfeit currency worth Rs 1.60 crore, featuring Bollywood actor Anupam Kher’s image in place of Mahatma Gandhi. The Rs 500 notes, which also carried the misspelling "Resole Bank of India" instead of "Reserve Bank of India," were used to dupe a bullion firm owner in a gold purchase.
The unidentified suspects were detained by police after attempting to pass off the fake notes. Images of the counterfeit currency quickly spread on social media, eliciting reactions of both shock and amusement.
In a separate incident, police busted a counterfeit currency manufacturing unit in Surat, Gujarat, which was operating under the guise of an online garment business. Four individuals were arrested on 22 September.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajdeep Nakum said the accused were inspired by the popular web series 'Farzi', which centres around a con artist forging currency. The Surat Special Operations Group (SOG) raided the office in the Sarthana area and seized fake currency with a face value of Rs 1.20 lakh. Three suspects were arrested during the raid, with a fourth apprehended later.
According to reports, the accused rented the office specifically for their counterfeiting activities. The SOG team had been monitoring the location closely before carrying out the operation.
