Andhra Pradesh is set to get its eighth airport following the state Cabinet's green light for the Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport project in Nellore. This isn't just about adding another runway; it’s a strategic move to plug a major gap in the state's industrial and logistics map. By placing an airport right in the middle of a zone connected to National Highways and two massive ports — Krishnapatnam and Ramayapatnam — the government is clearly betting on a "multimodal" future where sea, road, and air transport work together.
The project already has the necessary nod from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the state has officially opened the floor for private players to come on board for its development and long-term operation. Spanning over 1,300 acres, the airport is being built with the future in mind. Phase 1 is designed to handle 1.4 million passengers a year, but the master plan allows that to scale up to a massive 15 million. There is also a heavy focus on cargo, which makes sense given the proximity to industrial hubs like KRIS City and the IFFCO SEZs.
For businesses in southern Andhra Pradesh, this is likely to be a game-changer. Beyond the corporate side, the project is expected to be a major job engine for the local population, creating roles in everything from aviation and logistics to the initial construction phase.
With this approval, the state is sending a clear signal that it wants to move fast on infrastructure.
