Ahead of the much-awaited Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which are happening after a decade, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has arrived in Srinagar to review the prevailing security situation in the region.
“Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is in Srinagar to take stock of the security situation in view of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
The security forces and formation commanders will brief him on the prevailing security situation there,” said Army officials.
The Army Chief flew to Srinagar directly from Jodhpur, where he attended the ongoing military exercise, Tarang Shakti.
General Dwivedi also met with Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar. Apart from the Army Chief, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, GOC 15 Corps, and Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar were also present at the meeting.
The Army Chief will review the security measures and assess the forward formations on Friday.
Meanwhile, voting in J&K will be held in three phases: the first phase of polling will commence on September 18, the second phase on September 25, and voting for the final phase will be held on October 1.
The results of the polls will be declared on October 8. The Assembly elections in J&K are taking place after a gap of 10 years; this will be the first time that Jammu and Kashmir is going to elections without Article 370, which was abrogated by the Centre on August 5, 2019.
To ensure a safe and smooth polling process, the Centre has deployed stringent security measures in the UT.
While the Army is not making any strategic shifts in its approach until the voting is over on October 1, the present Army Corps Commander, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, will be replaced by Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava.
However, due to the upcoming polls in the UT, the Army has delayed the rotational command change until the third week of October.
