Security forces and police resumed their joint operation to track down the terrorists in a remote forest area of the higher reaches in the Udhampur district on early Saturday morning.
The soldier was critically injured late Friday evening when the suspected terrorists hiding in the forest area opened fire on the joint forces. The Army and the Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police engaged the terrorists at the Seoj Dhar forest in the Dudu-Basantgarh area of Udhampur and Bhaderwah in Doda district, the officials said.
The injured soldier was shifted to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The area around the encounter site was kept under a tight cordon through the night, and the joint search operation resumed on Saturday morning.
Officials added that two to three terrorists are believed to be hiding in the forest area. Further reinforcements have been rushed to the spot, and the cordon has been tightened with the deployment of drones and sniffer dogs.
