Health authorities have reported a rise in HIV cases in the district, with a significant number of infections detected in Burdwan city, according to the Public Health Department of the Zilla Parishad. Officials said around 90 people in the district are currently living with HIV, of whom nearly 30 are residents of Burdwan city.

Health authorities described the recent spike as unusual compared to previous years.

District public health chief Biswanath Roy said most of the recently identified cases in the city involve young and educated individuals.

“There are about 90 HIV positive people in the district, and nearly 30 are from Burdwan city alone. This year’s situation is different from earlier ones,” he said, adding that awareness programmes are regularly conducted in high-risk areas.

According to the Health Department, the rise in cases came to light after a young man, who had been unwell for a long time, underwent several medical tests, including an HIV test. After he tested positive, people in his close circle were also tested, leading to multiple detections within a short period.

Officials said they are prepared to handle the situation and have begun treatment for those diagnosed, while maintaining strict confidentiality.

“Though infections have increased in some areas, the situation is largely under control. All patients are receiving treatment with their identities kept confidential,” Roy said.

Health experts emphasised that HIV is a preventable and manageable condition. They stressed the importance of safe sexual practices, regular screening, early diagnosis, and timely treatment to control the spread of the infection.

The Health Department said the rise in cases reflects changing social behaviours, gaps in awareness, and delayed treatment. The health department plans to intensify awareness campaigns across the city and is advising people engaged in high-risk behaviour to undergo voluntary testing.
