An arrest warrant has been issued against Akhtar Ali, who was among the first to expose alleged financial corruption at RG Kar Hospital, after he failed to appear before the Alipore Central Bureau of Investigation court on Friday despite multiple summonses.

 

The CBI has already filed several charge sheets in connection with the financial irregularities at the hospital, and Ali’s name was included in the latest supplementary charge sheet. Investigators allege that he was directly involved in the corruption.

 

According to court sources, Ali repeatedly avoided appearing before the court and instead moved the Calcutta High Court seeking anticipatory bail. However, his plea was recently rejected by the High Court.

 

On Friday, Ali’s lawyer told the Alipore court that his client was unwell and undergoing treatment in a hospital, which prevented him from appearing. The court, however, was not satisfied with the explanation. The judge observed that while a doctor might have advised rest, there were doubts about the necessity of hospitalisation.

 

During the hearing, the CBI alleged that Ali was deliberately using illness as an excuse to evade court orders. The matter also drew reference to former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh, who is currently in custody in the same case. His lawyer questioned how Ali could repeatedly defy court orders when Ghosh was in jail on similar charges.

 

In this context, the court directed the issuance of an arrest warrant against Akhtar Ali.

 

According to the CBI charge sheet, Ali had been associated with RG Kar Hospital even before Sandeep Ghosh and allegedly played an active role in the financial irregularities. Although he brought the corruption allegations to light when the hospital came under scrutiny following the rape and murder of a female doctor, investigators claim he attempted to conceal his own involvement.

 

The arrest warrant has now been issued based on those allegations, and further action is expected as the investigation continues.
