Arunachal to tighten borders, city security with AI cameras

The Arunachal Pradesh government is set to install AI-enabled cameras across all towns and cities to enhance public safety. The initiative, part of broader security measures, includes new fire stations, forensic centres, and police reinforcements across districts, alongside steps to combat the state’s rising drug menace.

The Arunachal Pradesh government will install artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras in all towns and cities in a phased manner to bolster public safety, Home Minister Mama Natung has said.

Natung stated that the process of installing AI-enabled closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 22 check-gates had already commenced, aimed at curbing the movement of unwanted elements and restricted items along the inter-state borders with Assam and Nagaland.

Emphasising the government’s commitment to law and order, the minister underscored several measures taken to strengthen the police force.

“We will install state-of-the-art AI-enabled traffic cameras and CCTV cameras in all cities and towns in a phased manner to enhance public safety and security,” he said.

The government has recently granted ‘Special Grade’ promotions to 3,558 personnel of the Arunachal Pradesh Police, Arunachal Pradesh Police Battalion (AAPBn), Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn), and Fire and Emergency Services, a move aimed at boosting morale within the force, he added.

The state cabinet had approved the proposal on 28 October last year, enabling promotions for police constables, head constables, and assistant sub-inspectors across civil police, AAPBn, and IRBn, including the motor transport (MT) and telecom wings.

Natung revealed that the state budget has allocated funds for infrastructure development, including an upgrade at the Second Armed Police Battalion Headquarters in Aalo, West Siang district, as well as the establishment of a forensic centre at the Police Training Centre in Banderdewa.

Further, the government plans to set up new fire stations across all districts by 2029, with the first phase covering Wakro, Chowkham, Hayuliang, Mebo, Kimin, Deomali, Miao, Lungla, and Kalaktang this year.

The minister also highlighted training for police personnel under Mission Karmayogi to ensure the effective implementation of the three new criminal laws, focusing on justice over retribution.

Addressing the issue of substance abuse, Natung said the government is taking a multi-faceted approach under the Mukhya Mantri Nasha Mukti Yojana, incorporating treatment and rehabilitation initiatives.

“We have established five drug de-addiction centres and constituted the Arunachal Pradesh Drug De-Addiction Society. Additionally, the 2025-26 budget proposes setting up a well-equipped de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in the Itanagar Capital Region for long-term treatment and rehabilitation,” he said.

Plans are also in place to strengthen addiction treatment facilities across all district hospitals. Arunachal Pradesh remains among the top three states battling substance abuse, with community-based organisations and public representatives voicing concerns over its impact on the state’s development, he noted.

Natung called upon stakeholders to collaborate with the government in tackling the menace, stating that government efforts alone would not suffice.

On addressing manpower shortages at police stations, particularly in the eastern districts of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, he pointed out that the state cabinet had sanctioned 3,000 police personnel posts last year.

“Once the recruitment process is completed, the manpower requirement in many police stations will be met,” he asserted.

In August last year, Natung had submitted a proposal to Union Home Minister Amit Shah under the Tirap-Changlang-Longding Package 2.0 Action Plan, seeking additional support to strengthen policing in the insurgency-affected districts.

Additionally, the government is considering a uniform allowance for police personnel, with the amount to be directly credited to their bank accounts.

This, he noted, is part of broader reforms aimed at improving facilities for the police force, including women officers.
