Amid deteriorating air quality in the national capital, Delhi government will install air purifiers in ten thousand school classrooms as a prioritized measure to ensure clean air for the students.
Briefing the media today, Delhi Minister Ashish Sood said the air purifiers will be installed in the first phase as part of the government’s continued efforts to improve air quality. He added that the tender process for the project has already been initiated.“We want our children to study smart and also breathe smart air. In the first phase, air purifiers will be installed in 10,000 classrooms. Tenders have been floated today itself," he added. Official data shows there are 1,047 government and government-aided schools.
In a post on X, Sood shared a list of initiatives being taken by the Delhi government to curb the pollution issue.Pointing fingers at the political rival, the Minister also claimed that the previous Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Delhi government did not do any work to solve the problem of Air Pollution in Delhi. He alleged that they were only interested in advertising and PR activities and said, “we are not among those flaunting IIT degrees and do campaigns like odd-even cars…instead we believe in taking long term administrative measures”.
Sood also claimed that the previous government had installed 30% of the Air Quality Monitoring stations in the green belt of the national capital. He alleged that the intention behind it was not to clean the air but to clean the statistics.Amid the severe air quality level and imposition of Grap 4 in Delhi-NCR, the national capital has suspended offline classes till Class 5, while Classes 6 to 11 will be held in hybrid mode. As per the order of the Directorate of Education, Delhi schools up to Class 5 will conduct classes in online mode while Classes 6 to 12 will be continued in hybrid mode.
Schools have been advised to minimise physical attendance while continuing lessons through a combination of online and offline learning. Under GRAP-IV, state governments and the Delhi government also have the option to suspend physical classes for Classes VI to IX and Class XI, depending on local conditions.
The decision has been taken due to the prevailing high Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city, it said. Schools have been directed to conduct classes for these students only in online mode. However, classes for the remaining grades will be conducted in hybrid mode, according to the directions issued by the education department on December 13.
