As Mizoram gears up for the Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) is eyeing its inaugural victory since its inception in 2017. With only one Lok Sabha seat, reserved for the Scheduled Tribe, the electoral battle in Mizoram promises to be a significant affair, slated for April 19.

A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis reveals crucial insights into the ZPM's electoral prospects:

Strengths:

  • The ZPM clinched victory in the state assembly polls last November, bolstering its stronghold and garnering majority support.
  • With a short tenure of just four months, the absence of anti-incumbency bodes well for the ruling party.
  • Historical trends indicate that Lok Sabha polls in Mizoram often favor the ruling party, further bolstering ZPM's chances.
  • The party's expanding presence in both urban and rural areas strengthens its grassroots engagement.
  • By abstaining from aligning with the BJP-led NDA and voicing opposition to contentious issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Uniform Civil Code, the ZPM appeals to sentiments rooted in Mizo culture and religion.
  • Emphasizing development and welfare schemes for farmers and youth adds to the party's appeal.

Weaknesses:

  • The ZPM lacks a robust organizational setup compared to opposition stalwarts like the MNF and Congress, primarily relying on neutral voters' support.
  • Failures to fulfill promises, such as procuring agricultural products within the first three months of governance, may dent the party's credibility, especially among disgruntled farmers.
  • Ambiguity regarding alliances with national blocs like the INDIA alliance or NDA could undermine voter confidence.

Opportunities:

  • Early candidate announcements provide ZPM a strategic advantage over rivals like MNF and Congress, yet to declare their candidates.
  • A weak opposition, coupled with the ruling party's momentum, positions the ZPM favorably.
  • The party's independent stance and focus on local issues resonate with Mizoram's electorate.

Threats:

  • Perception of BJP as anti-Christian and Congress/INDIA bloc's opposition to BJP's Hindutva policies pose challenges.
  • Being a standalone regional party sans national bloc affiliations may impact electoral outcomes.
  • MNF's robust organizational framework and historical presence remain competitive threats.
