The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, recognised as the largest such garden in Asia, will be formally opened to the public for the 2026 season on March 16, officials said on Tuesday.
Director of Floriculture, Kashmir, Mathoora Masoom informed that the garden, situated on the foothills of the Zabarwan Range with a view of the Dal Lake, is fully prepared to receive visitors. The annual blooming of the garden traditionally marks the commencement of the tourist season in the Valley.
“With the tulips now in full bloom, the department has decided to commence the visiting schedule for the season from March 16,” Director Masoom said.Officials said approximately 1.8 million tulip bulbs, comprising between 70 and 75 different varieties, have been planted this season.
The density of flower-beds has been enhanced this year to present a more vibrant and striking floral spectacle for visitors. While tourists flock Kashmir throughout the year, they come especially during this time to enjoy the visual treat of this garden.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip garden, previously Model Floriculture Center, is a tulip garden in Srinagar. It is the largest tulip garden in Asia spread over an area of about 30 hectares. It is situated on the foothills of Zabarwan Range with an overview of Dal Lake.
The garden was opened in 2007 with the aim to boost floriculture and tourism in Kashmir Valley. The garden is built on a sloping ground in a terraced fashion consisting of seven terraces. Apart from tulips, many other species of flowers – hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus have been added as well
Tulip festival is an annual celebration that aims to showcase the range of flowers in the garden as a part of tourism efforts by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. It is organized during the onset of spring season in Kashmir valley.
Tulip Garden on the foothills of the Zabarwan hill witnessed 2.50 Lakh visitors in 2019 spring and remains open for nearly a month in the month of March and April depending upon the bloom of the flowers.The garden named as Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden receives an overwhelming response from both locals, tourists from other states of India in the spring season.
According to official figures, the garden witnessed an increase in visitors in the year 2019 compared to 2018 and 2017.
Situated on the foothills of Zabarwan hill near famous Dal Lake, the garden was first opened for public in 2008 and it is spread over an area of about 15 hectares.
The garden has attracted many crews of the film and TV industry in the past besides local and other state tourists. When in full bloom the tulips spread a rainbow of red, orange, purple, white, pink, parrot and yellow colours on the precincts and the garden has been described as a ‘florimarvel’ by cultivators.In 2014 World Tulip Summit Society declared it the second-best tulip garden in the world.
