Assam is preparing for a landmark cultural spectacle as nearly 10,000 artistes rehearse for a mass performance of the traditional Bodo dance, Bagurumba, aimed at creating a world record at Sarusajai Stadium here on January 17.

Preparations are in full swing across the state, with a three-day rehearsal programme underway to ensure seamless coordination for what is being described as one of Assam’s most ambitious cultural events. Dancers from several districts are taking part in large-scale practice sessions at multiple venues.

From the Boko–Chhaygaon and Palashbari Assembly constituencies alone, around 545 performers are set to participate. At rehearsal grounds such as Gandhi Maidan in Boko, artistes have been seen practising in perfect synchrony, refining the graceful and rhythmic movements that characterise Bagurumba, popularly known as the “butterfly dance” of the Bodo community.

Organisers said the mega event is expected to mark a significant moment in Assam’s cultural calendar, symbolising unity, discipline and collective pride. By bringing together dancers from diverse regions, the programme seeks to showcase the richness and continuity of Bodo traditions on an unprecedented scale.

Adding to the occasion’s prominence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event, giving the cultural showcase national visibility.

Organisers believe the mass Bagurumba performance will not only earn a place in global record books but also reinforce the cultural identity and heritage of the Bodo people through their centuries-old dance form.
