The Assam cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the creation of 1,766 new posts for graduate mathematics teachers in state schools.

The decision aims to enhance the quality of education in Assam and address the shortage of qualified teachers.

Additionally, the cabinet sanctioned the recruitment of 221 posts for third and fourth-grade staff in 11 polytechnics and two engineering colleges.

The governing bodies of these institutions will oversee the recruitment process, with salaries funded by the state budget, ensuring no outsourcing.

The cabinet also approved increasing the council constituency numbers for the Moran and Matak Autonomous Councils from 22 to 27, reflecting the need for better representation.

Furthermore, 16 villages predominantly inhabited by the Bodo community in Sonitpur and Biswanath districts have been included in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

In a separate context, CM Sarma expressed serious concerns about the declining Hindu population in Assam and Bangladesh amid ongoing unrest in the neighbouring country.

Citing census data from 1951 to 2011, he highlighted a 9.23 per cent decrease in Assam's Hindu population and a staggering 13.5 per cent decline in Bangladesh.

He warned that this demographic trend could extend to other eastern regions bordering Bangladesh, including West Bengal and Jharkhand.
