Assam has cleared a major round of infrastructure and policy interventions, ranging from high-speed road corridors to a FIFA-standard stadium, as the Cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma signed off on a series of expansive measures on Thursday.
The most substantial approval came in the form of Asom Mala 3.0, a ₹3,217-crore programme that will see 883 km of fast-transport roads and 36 bridges built across 34 districts. Officials described the scheme as critical to strengthening regional connectivity and integrating rural clusters more closely with urban centres.
In a parallel push to position the state as a sports hub, the Cabinet granted administrative approval of ₹765 crore for the redevelopment of the historic R.G. Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati. The plan includes a 25,000-seat FIFA Category 2 stadium, envisaged as a multi-sport facility capable of hosting national and international events.

Other decisions carried a broad emphasis on environmental protection and cultural values. A Community-Led Riverbank Protection Policy was cleared to tackle chronic erosion and flooding, with a framework built on voluntary land relinquishment to speed up embankment works and deepen local participation.
The government will also table both hard and digital copies of the Commission of Enquiry report on the Assam Disturbances of 1983 (T.P. Tewary Commission) during the forthcoming Assembly session.
Complementing the economic and infrastructural focus, the Cabinet endorsed the Matri Pitri Vandana initiative, allowing state employees special casual leave between 9–12 July or 23–26 July 2026 to encourage time spent with parents and elders.
Chief Minister Sarma said the Cabinet decisions reflect the state’s commitment to “holistic development, modernising infrastructure, and strengthening community and family ties”, according to an official release.
