In a strategic move ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a cabinet expansion scheduled for December 7.
The decision aims to address ministerial workload and enhance regional representation in the government.
Currently, the Assam cabinet comprises 15 members, including the Chief Minister, although it has the capacity to include 18. Three positions remain vacant, which are expected to be filled during the upcoming reshuffle.
One of the most pressing concerns has been the absence of representation from Barak Valley.
This gap was created earlier this year following the resignation of former minister Parimal Suklabaidya, who vacated his cabinet post after being elected to the Lok Sabha.
The lack of a Barak Valley representative has fuelled demands for inclusivity, with political observers predicting that at least one new appointee will hail from the region.
"The decision to expand the cabinet reflects our commitment to strengthening governance and addressing the aspirations of all regions," a senior party leader remarked.
With several ministers currently managing multiple portfolios, the expansion is also aimed at streamlining administration to ensure a more efficient delivery of governance.
The reshuffle is widely perceived as a calculated measure to bolster regional balance and prepare the ruling party for the forthcoming elections.
