Special Director General of Police (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, said the inquiry is “almost complete.”

The investigation into the death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg is in its final phase, with the charge sheet scheduled to be filed on December 12, a senior police official said on Saturday. Garg died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, triggering widespread grief and demands for clarity surrounding the circumstances.

Special Director General of Police (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, said the inquiry is “almost complete.”

“The details will be given in the chargesheet,” he said, adding that seven people have been arrested and over 300 witnesses examined so far. Gupta declined to share more information, stating that further details would become public once the charge sheet is submitted.

On Friday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the SIT had wrapped up its investigation, compiling nearly 3,500 pages of documents. He stressed the urgency of timely submission. “We should get the documents before December 18. Otherwise, the accused currently in jail will become eligible for bail,” he said.

Earlier, during the winter session of the Assembly on November 25, the Chief Minister declared that the artiste’s death was a case of murder, not negligence. He said the state government had reached this conclusion by the third day of the SIT probe, which began on September 23.

“All accused have been booked under BNS Sections 61, 105, and 106. We also urged the Gauhati High Court to add Section 103 (formerly IPC 302),” Sarma said, adding, “Preliminary investigation confirmed it was not negligence but murder. If we didn’t add Section 103, all accused would have been out on bail.”
