On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan on Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed Aadhaar, ration, Ayushman, and Orunodoi cards to residents of the government old age home in Sonapur, near Guwahati.
The event saw Sarma accompanied by Social Welfare Minister Pijush Hazarika and Dispur MLA Atul Bora.
Sarma also announced that doctors from the nearby civil hospital would provide free monthly health check-ups to the elderly residents. This initiative aims to improve their access to medical care and essential services.
During his visit, the residents celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying 'rakhis' to Sarma and the accompanying dignitaries, and presenting them with red roses as tokens of affection.
Sarma highlighted the benefits of the new cards: the Aadhaar card will serve as identification, enabling access to government benefits and bank services; the ration card will provide five kilograms of free rice monthly; the Ayushman card will offer cashless medical treatment up to Rs five lakh annually; and the Orunodoi scheme will deliver Rs 1,250 per month directly to their bank accounts to support their expenses.
Earlier in the day, Sarma received rakhis from various organisations at his official residence.
