Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged industrialists not to hire illegal migrants from Bangladesh, emphasising the need to address the issue at its root.
Speaking at a press conference after meeting business leaders from major companies like Tata, Adani Group, and Mahindra, Sarma said industries should avoid employing illegal Bangladeshi migrants as cheap labour.
He explained that some middlemen arrange for such labour from Bangladesh, and industries must take a stand against it. Sarma stressed that Assam has been tackling this issue since 1979, and it remains a priority for the state.
Assam is preparing for the "Advantage Assam 2.0" investment summit, scheduled for February 25-26 in Guwahati. The state expects investment commitments worth Rs 1 lakh crore in key sectors like tourism, semiconductors, and defense.
Sarma highlighted Tata's plans for a Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor assembly plant, set to begin operations by the end of the year, and a proposal for a 500-MW solar project in Assam. He also mentioned a new industrial policy to utilise unused tea estate land for solar power projects.
The state’s strategic location near northeastern defense zones makes it an ideal hub for defense production and repair, an area discussed with the Adani Group and Mahindra. Sarma emphasised Assam's potential for growth and its commitment to driving economic development.
