Assam has identified 1,72,673 illegal immigrants under the provisions of the Assam Accord, but only 31,789 of them have been removed from the state so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the Assembly.
Responding in writing to a question raised by AGP MLA Diptimayee Choudhury, the Chief Minister said the detection process has led to the identification of approximately 1.73 lakh individuals residing unlawfully in the state.
Sarma stated that the government has managed to repatriate 31,789 illegal foreigners so far, although no details were provided regarding their countries of origin. He added that the total includes 470 deportations, 29,663 individuals pushed back across the border, 1,572 repatriated following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and 84 people expelled.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, further informed the House that proceedings against 73,759 suspected illegal immigrants are currently pending before various Foreigners Tribunals across Assam.
Under the Assam Accord, all foreigners who entered the state on or after March 25, 1971, are to be identified, removed from electoral rolls, and deported in accordance with legal provisions.
Sarma also stated that 174 declared foreigners are currently lodged at a transit camp in Goalpara, which was previously designated as a detention centre.
