Football fans in Assam can now enjoy late-night World Cup action at their favourite eateries, as the state government has announced extended restaurant operating hours on select match days.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said restaurants in Guwahati will be allowed to remain open until 3:30 am on July 15, 16, 19 and 20. The move is aimed at allowing football enthusiasts to watch the semi-final and final matches without inconvenience.
Sharing the announcement on X, Sarma highlighted football's ability to bring people together and said the government wants fans to enjoy the tournament collectively. He added that the Guwahati district administration has been authorised to implement the extended timings on the specified dates.
The Chief Minister also directed district administrations across Assam to consider similar relaxations in their respective areas, subject to requests from Restaurant Owners' Associations and sufficient public demand.
Appealing to football fans, Sarma urged them to celebrate responsibly while making the most of the extended operating hours. "Enjoy the beautiful game responsibly," he said.
Officials said the initiative is intended not only to improve the match-viewing experience for football enthusiasts but also to support the hospitality sector by encouraging late-night business.
In addition, the Assam government has set up FIFA Fan Parks in Guwahati and Dibrugarh, where large public screenings are being organised, allowing fans to gather and watch the matches in a festive atmosphere.
